UNDERSTANDING THE FEASTS [Pt 2]
One of the clearest visual aids which God gave the Jews pertained to their religious holidays or more correctly ‘Holy-Days’. The Bible refers to these religious holy-days as the FEASTS OF JEHOVAH. God established these special celebrations when He brought the Hebrews out of Egypt.[Lev 23:2-4].
Today, when we hear the word ’Feast’ we think of an elaborate meal or banquet but this is not the meaning in this case. The Feasts of Jehovah were special convocations or assemblies established by God when the Jews would come together in a special way for a special purpose. They were religious gatherings and in a sense, our Sunday Church services, whether IN A PHYSICAL BUILDING or THROUGH ON-LINE ASSEMBLY OR ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLING are a type of feast because they are holy assemblies of God’s people.
God established 7 of these feasts and scheduled them on the Hebrew calendar in such a way that the Jews would have to travel to Jerusalem 3 times a year to keep them. These 3 Feasts were known as: 1. Passover, 2. Pentecost & 3. Tabernacles. They portrayed and represented 3 major encounters with God in the lives of His Covenant people and basically had the purpose of providing His Divine Peace, His Divine Power, and His Divine Rest in their lives [see Ex 23:14-17, Deut 16:16].
The FEAST OF PASSOVER: This was the first of the feast seasons and was designed to teach the Hebrews how to find GOD’S PEACE. Passover included the Feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, and First Fruits.
The FEAST OF PENTECOST was the second feast season and was a single feast- Pentecost taught the Hebrews how to receive GOD'S POWER.
The FEAST OF TABERNACLES was the third feast season and its purpose was to teach the Hebrews how to enter GOD'S REST, and included the Feasts of Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles.
The Feasts of Jehovah were very important VISUAL AIDS for the Hebrew people. Each of the seven Feats pointed them to their Messiah, Jesus, and each uniquely portrayed a particular aspect of His life and ministry.
Taken as a whole, they form a complete visual aid of the Person and work of Jesus Christ, and the steps one must take to walk in the PEACE, POWER & REST of God.
